Psychological services are a highly specialized form of health care, which requires extensive training.
For most psychologists in Ontario, it requires a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and a doctoral degree. Coinciding with academic training, it also involves multiple clinical placements, residency at a medical centre or similar facility, and supervised practice during the first years of professional practice. All totalled it's generally an 11 to 12 year process after high-school. Psychologists are among the most rigorously trained among the regulated professions.
Many other regulated and unregulated health professionals may offer fine counselling services but are often not eligible providers for reimbursement by insurance companies.
The Ontario Psychological Association (OPA) recommends an hourly rate for practitioners based on years of training, specialization, supply and demand, and rates charged by comparable professions. We also consider what rates are typical for other psychologists in our region and set ours at level that's consistent with other practices in London.
But the value of a service isn't just determined by the specialization of the practitioner, it's also contained in the importance it has to consumers.
We consider quality psychological services to be an investment that you make in yourself. It's the kind of investment that pays dividends in the form of healthier relationships, increased success and productivity in career, and skills that allow you to navigate the challenges of life in a more productive manner.
